Pack 19 will spend 2 nights on the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point (near Charleston) South Carolina. The USS Yorktown (CV-10) was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy. Under construction as Bon Homme Richard, this new Essex-class carrier was renamed Yorktown in honor of Yorktown (CV-5), sunk at the epic Battle of Midway (June 1942). Built in an amazing 16 ½ months at Newport News, Virginia, Yorktown was commissioned on April 15, 1943. Yorktown participated significantly in the Pacific Offensive that began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945. Yorktown received the Presidential Unit Citation and earned 11 battle stars for service in World War II. Much of the Academy Award-winning (1944) documentary "The Fighting Lady" was filmed aboard Yorktown.
We will sleep in the berthing areas where
its sailors once slept, learn about naval and aviation history. All
meals and an excursion are included. More information to be provided at
Scouting For Food
In conjunction with other area Packs, and sponsored by Food Lion, this is a great community service project that we participate in. On the first Saturday, we meeting at a predetermined location and then proceed to our designated neighborhoods. The Scouts have plastic grocery bags that we place on the front door/mail box of homes. The bags have information printed on them describing the program and requested that they be filled with food items and placed on the front porch/steps the next Saturday morning.
On the second Saturday, we meet together as a Pack and then go back to the same neighborhoods and collect the bags of food. We then meet back at the church and sort the food. Then we take the collection to Community Outreach of Archdale-Trinity (COAT).
For over 30 years, Archdale United Methodist Church has sponsored Pack 19 in Archdale. One of the first Cub Scout Packs in the area, Pack 19 has a long tradition of Scouting. On Scout Sunday, our Pack, along with Troop 19, take part in the church service at Archdale UMC. A leader from the Pack and the Troop speak about the activities over the past year and our plans for the coming months. It is a great way to show our appreciation for their sponsorship.
